Description
The Azure Blue Chefs Knife is a one of a kind hand made knife, created at the intersection of traditional bladesmithing and modern knife making. Starting from a single bar of W2 high carbon tool steel, the blade was hand forged and given form from fire and hammer where after it went through a meticulous process of refinement to create the piece shown. Named after the azure blue color of the handle scales, this knife evokes feelings of water and of the sky and was made to be a piece of functional art.
The blade features a striking and active hamon line, full of ashi as well as utsuri. The hamon line is the visual representation of the hardened cutting edge from the softer, tougher spine, and ashi and utsuri are further complexities which add to the value and uniqueness of the piece, also indicating a high degree of craftsmanship and knowledge of Japanese heat treating techniques. The thin convex geometry of the blade provides a strong razor sharp edge that reduces cutting resistance and the distal taper from the bolster to the tip is ideal for slicing. The rounded and polished choil and spine provide the user with maximum comfort during use and the 54 mm blade height ensures adequate knuckle clearance. Overall the knife has a heavier feel in hand, but is perfectly balanced at the makers mark.
The handle is a multi-piece construction utilizing several different materials to create a balanced and comfortable grip, as well as an aesthetically unique one. This piece has a frame handle design whereas the handle was built outward from a central frame that was machined from titanium and tightly fit into a receiver slot in the top and bottom of the decorative stainless steel bolster. The frame is then locked into place in the bolster using a hidden tang nut that’s inside the handle. The stabilized masur birch scales are held onto the frame using a marine grade epoxy as well as 9 small bronze pins. Finally there is a recessed mother of pearl inlay into both scales for added embellishment. All of the handle pieces have been heirloom fit as well. This style of handle is quite the challenge to create and adds levels of complexity and craftsmanship, as well as rarity and value to the overall piece.
The Azure Blue Chefs Knife was created for collectors, chefs, and enthusiasts who value craftsmanship as an art form—where a high performance blade is only part of the story, and the true appeal lies in the permanence of fire, steel, and human hands shaping something that’s truly one of one.
